The creator of “Hamilton” and the director of “Crazy Rich Asians” invite you to a cinematic event, where the streets are made of music and little dreams become big... “In the Heights.”

Lights up on Washington Heights...The scent of a cafecito caliente hangs in the air just outside of the 181st Street subway stop, where a kaleidoscope of dreams rallies this vibrant and tight-knit community. At the intersection of it all is the likeable, magnetic bodega owner Usnavi (Anthony Ramos), who saves every penny from his daily grind as he hopes, imagines and sings about a better life.

“In the Heights” fuses Lin-Manuel Miranda’s kinetic music and lyrics with director Jon M. Chu’s lively and authentic eye for storytelling to capture a world very much of its place, but universal in its experience.

“In the Heights” stars Anthony Ramos (“A Star is Born,” Broadway’s “Hamilton”), Corey Hawkins (“Straight Outta Compton,” “BlacKkKlansman”), singer/songwriter Leslie Grace, Melissa Barrera (TV’s “Vida”), Olga Merediz (Broadway’s “In the Heights”), Daphne Rubin-Vega (Broadway’s “Rent”), Gregory Diaz IV (Broadway’s “Matilda the Musical”), Stephanie Beatriz (TV’s “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”), Dascha Polanco (TV’s “Orange is the New Black”) and Jimmy Smits (the “Star Wars” films).

Chu directed the film from a screenplay by Quiara Alegría Hudes, based on the musical stage play, music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, book by Quiara Alegría Hudes and concept by Miranda. Miranda, Hudes, Scott Sanders, Anthony Bregman and Mara Jacobs produced the film, with David Nicksay and Kevin McCormick serving as executive producers.

Behind the camera, Chu reunited with his “Crazy Rich Asians” production designer, Nelson Coates, and editor, Myron Kerstein. He also collaborated with director of photography Alice Brooks (TV’s “The Walking Dead”) and costume designer Mitchell Travers (“Eighth Grade”). Original songs by Miranda. Alex Lacamoire (“Fosse/Verdon”) and Bill Sherman (“Sesame Street”) served as executive music producers. The choreography is by Christopher Scott, who previously teamed with Chu on the award-winning “The Legion of Extraordinary Dancers.”
“In the Heights” was filmed in New York, primarily on location in the dynamic community of Washington Heights.

Warner Bros. Pictures presents a 5000 Broadway / Barrio Grrrl! / Likely Story / SGS Pictures Production, A Jon M. Chu Film, “In the Heights.” Slated to open on June 10, 2021 in theaters and on HBO Max, the film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures. It will be available on HBO Max for 31 days from theatrical release.

“In the Heights” is rated PG-13 for some language and suggestive references.

This movie was magical. Talking to my girlfriend afterwards about why it was so impactful made me realize that it’s one of the first times I can remember seeing this many black and brown people on screen for a solid two and a half hours where not a single storyline had to do with crime, prison, slavery, drug use, gangs, or segregation. No mention of any sort of criminal activity. No equating darker skin with malice or mischief. Just hardworking people of color trying to do their best to live their dreams. Revolutionary.

By the early 50's the music of the past thirty (60) years, the traditional "Latin Music" or Caribbean Latin music from New York, Puerto Rico and Cuba, was fading and losing followers. The famous night clubs dedicated to this music began to close, the worst case was the closing of the Palladium in New York. On the other hand, "Cuba closed its market for more than 20 years, from 1960 to 1980, due to the revolution, there were no more night clubs or dance halls in Havana". That old traditional music needed a renovation, revitalization and updating, according to the new times. Before the arrival of Salsa, the common rhythms had their own particular characteristics: Guaracha, Son, Rumba, Rumba, Mambo, Cha cha cha cha, Pachanga, Charanga, Boogaloo and other rhythms that aged and lost space and popularity (†). Thus, the new salsa movement began to take shape in the mid 60's and by the beginning of the 70's it had matured. By this time, New York City was home to more than one million five hundred thousand (1,500,000) Puerto Ricans and about fifty thousand (50,000) of them were musicians. Since 1962 the Puerto Ricans began to use the word "Salsa" to define this new musical sound, its proponent and the one who would commercialize this word would be Izzy Sanabria. The new sound of "Guaracha Jazz" type Salsa, brought by Puerto Ricans: Tito Puente, Tito Rodriguez, Rafael Cortijo and Ismael Rivera, Richie Ray and Bobby Cruz, Willie Colon and Hector Lavoe, El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico, Willie Rosario, Bobby Valentin, Roberto Rohena and his Apollo Sound, La Sonora Ponceña and Tommy Olivencia, just to mention a few, had a clear Puerto Rican flavor and that changed and transformed everything. A new and more dynamic sound was created, which would be emphasized: (mostly Puerto Rican musicians and singers, a trombone section, electric piano, electric bass, bells, the use of the Puerto Rican cuatro, the playing of the Bomba on the Tambor, Aguinaldos and Seises in the musical compositions, the insistence on the guarachero style, as well as Puerto Rican lyrics and compositions, coupled with Latin Jazz style solos) all in keeping with the new times that would change the history of Caribbean music. The new nightclubs were now overwhelmingly owned by Puerto Ricans, an example of this was the Chetahh Nightclub (owned by Ralph Mercado), where "La Salsa" burst into the scene in an organized way. There was an immediate rejection and attack of the old Cuban musicians to this emerging music, Arsenio Rodriguez, annoyed left New York, for lack of job offers, his "typical Cuban and traditional" music was no longer liked, it was too slow and did not fit the time nor the dizzying dynamics of the city, Israel Lopez "Cachao", lamented the lack of opportunities, Mario Bauza and Machito lost prominence and fell into oblivion, they in turn, cataloged this genre of low musical value and tawdry. In fact, by 1976, Mario Bauza and Machito's sister "Graciela" left their orchestra (Machito's) when the latter tried to venture into "Salsa". Damaso Perez Prado, said that this music was a musical product for stupid people. The Cuban flutist José Fajardo, on the contrary, made his orchestra only with Puerto Rican musicians and went to live in Puerto Rico. And the critics were disappearing as well as the Cuban musical groups in New York. In the communist Cuba of the 60's and 70's, its entrance was rejected and it was not transmitted on the radio, nor were there any groups, clubs or dance halls where Salsa was played in that country. In the 80's, Fania visited Cuba and in the Carl Marx Theater, when the orchestra began to play, the Cubans got up from their seats and left the room. To top it all off, the Cuban exile community in Miami took it upon themselves to brand and discredit any Puerto Rican artist who wanted to go to Cuba, as happened with Andy Montañez". The Cuban rejection of "Incipient Salsa" was a sign of contempt for the new musical genre. The Puerto Ricans had created a new sound that evidently generated discomfort and disgust, the Boricuas now carried practically single-handedly the torch and representation of the new Afro-Antillean music. Among the innovators was the group Cortijo y su Combo with the "Sonero Mayor" Ismael Rivera, who in the 1950s integrated the Afro-Puerto Rican rhythms called bomba and plena into guarachas, and in a modern format for dance orchestra. This new music was of the barrio, of poor and humble people, it spoke of daily life, of the city, of the ghetto, of drugs, of violence, of revenge, of infidelities (Juana Peña, Calle Luna Calle Sol, Sigue Guisando, Quitate de la Via Perico, el Negrito Bembón, Pa' los Caserios...hector lavoe y willie colon...NUEVA YORK LA CIUDAD MAS GRANDE DE PUERTO RICO!

I havent seen a musical since i was little kid. I just finished this movie and I have to say I enjoyed it alot, and its left me both eager to see more Musicals in Film like Steven Spielberg's WEST SIDE STORY,but also more critical of how Steven Spielberg represents the Puerto Rican culture that is heavily prevalent in the material and was heavily Whitewashed in The 60s original. My biggest question I'm left with is where the the black Musical version ? I'd love to see a MUSICAL that celebrates BLACK CULTURE with a heavy influence on the early 90s NEW JACK SWING style of music like Bel-Biv-Devoe,BOYZ 2 MEN,New Edition and Bobby Brown.

Күн мурун
Kronch
Kronch

As for movie musicals: Dreamgirls and The Wiz are great Once on This Island is coming to Disney+ soon. Stage productions: Bring in 'da Noise, Bring in 'da Funk was a musical revue on Broadway celebrating black American culture. Ain't Misbehavin' was also a musical revue that won the Tony in 1978. There are quite a few all black cast Jazz musicals like Porgy and Bess. The Color Purple has a lot of jazz influence as well. Specifically concerning New Jack Swing, there isn't one that is solely based on New Jack Swing - though Bring in 'da Noise, Bring in 'da Funk has some.
